Sedation for nervous patients
The dentists at Antley Villa Dental Practice are used to looking after nervous patients and will do their best to put you at ease. Conscious sedation is available for patients who feel particularly anxious and need additional help to get them through an appointment.
Inhalation sedation is a common method of helping nervous patients. It involves you breathing in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen (also known as laughing or happy gas). This makes you feel pleasantly relaxed. You will be conscious and able to co-operate with the dentist throughout. Once the treatment has finished, the effects of the gas mixture are quickly reversed by breathing in pure oxygen. There are no after effects.
Intravenous (IV) sedation
Intravenous (IV) sedation involves a small injection, usually in the back of your hand. This is not uncomfortable, and will quickly make you feel drowsy and calm. Again, you will still be conscious and able to co-operate with the dentist. Afterwards you are unlikely to remember much about the treatment. It takes longer to wear off so you will need someone to take you home and stay with you.
